I see in the documentation that there is a "Read More" control, and although Use auto excerpts is off in theme options, but I cannot find the control itself. Please advise.

you may add Themler Post Read More control on the Posts tab
Or/and enable "read more" option under WP admin back end >> Appearance >> Theme Options
