I was able to edit a template then for no particular reason I am now getting

404 category not found

Please try these steps:
1. Temporary disable all third-party CMS plugins.
2. Clear cache:

3. Clear AppCache. Use Chrome browser for this:

Hi

I solved it. The site is at a temporary location but SEF was set to YES in Joomla Global Configuration. By turning this off it worked.
