How do I add side bar to the area marked at below screen shot? Side bar with category selection to pages, currently it is on product list and product pages only.

Left Sidebar can be activated on one, several or all templates in the Insert tab >> Content&Sidebars >> Left Sidebar, please make sure to enable it on the Page template as well.

That is the whole Content and Sidebars control that includes all the possible sidebars and the content. You need to enable Left sidebar as shown on the screen shot:
Also on your screen shot Content and Sidebars are not enabled, they should be enabled and only after that it will be possible to add the left sidebar.

Sorry, what exact problems do you have inserting the left sidebar? The screen shot above should be helpful. Also check that the Content and Sidebars control is enabled under the Insert tab >> Content and Sidebars.
