You may export the theme (with or without content - optionally) using File tab >> Export as Zip option and upload it later anywhere, for example, on your hosted website or localhost.

I know how to export a theme as a zipfile - but is it not possible to add themes to my account - so I can download them when I'm going to make a new design. (see screendump)
If that does not matter, what should this function be used for?

That is an old tab and you cannot upload themes to your account. If you need to use the theme in other location just export it with the editor included.
