Dear Madam/Sir

I am wondering about theme updates - especially for WordPress sites right now.
If we export a theme (with or without Themler) and import it into a WordPress install: does that theme get any security or compatibility updates by you through the WordPress update function or will it stay as it is forever?

Thanks
Mark

Hi Mark, from what I know, every time there is an update to themeler, you will get a red "!" icon inside themler editor, and you will have an option to update it to the latest version, so it's up to you if you want to update or not.....

I have a couple more questions regarding updates for WP and Themler.

  1. Are updates available to themes developed and sold to clients if they don't have a Themler licence. If not... do we have them create a child theme and provide the update to the core theme without content embedded.

    1. Do updates to Themler override any of the site content or CSS of the site. If so, is a child theme required for any changes to the original theme created.

Hi,

  1. The update can be seen and applied only inside Themler editor so your client won't see it as long as he does not have Themler license to access the editor. To update the theme you can log into the user site and update the theme using your Themler login details.
  2. The theme overrides only theme files when updating. So if you have changed anything manually i your theme after export, those changes will be removed after the update.

Sincerely,
Hella

Hi Hella

So, that means if there is a vulnerability in any of the components you use, that we have to manually log into each and every site we ever created with Themler to manually update Themler and themes to keep the sites safe from hacking?
I have seen enough sites hacked because themes didn't get automatic updates to make me very nervous about using Themler anywhere until you can push out these fixes automatically.
If we just install the themes without the Themler editor component - how secure are the themes against hacking without constant updates?

Hello Mark,
the theme updates are hackers vulnerability are not related anyhow. This is the main idea.

It is your choice where you'd like to update theme or use current theme version. That's why theme update is not automatic.

Also when theme is being updated automatic back up copy is created and you may switch to previous theme version in any time.

regards,
Aileen

So the themes without the Themler component don't have any code that could be exploited through injections/XSS or anything like that?
That sounds good.
How big of a chance that an (automatic) WordPress upgrade can break a theme in your opinion?

Thanks
Mark

Hi,

The problem may occur with some major updates when the CMS code is significantly changed. It's like when updating from version 3 to 4.
But note that we can not promise anything as we do not know what exactly WP developers are changing in the code.

Sincerely,
Hella
