Please try this way:
1. Import the theme in Themler desktop
2. Update it to the latest Themler version. You may need to update Beta update notifications in your profile for this.
3. Export the theme under a different name
4. Install the theme in your CMS.

Do you mean Wordpress site that comes with Themler (local installation) or your live site?
Do you have any 3rd party plugins installed? Try disabling them.

I made the mistake of trying to install the theme from the plugin section and not from the themes section.

As for Themler desktop, it is not recommended, to update CMS version, Ecommerce plugins or PHP in the local CMS installation. You may use the theme with the latest versions after export, on your website or localhost.
