In a ealier post of this problem the solution was to use PHP 7.x, but my site is on that. How to solve?

I have the same issue. I purchased a cheep third-party responsive menu extension which has helped me out. I managed to achieve the same thing I needed with a few tweaks.

The one I am using is "JUX Responsive Menu". There are a number of similar extensions out there. I am using Joomla 4.2.6. I am also using PHP 7.2 as Themler has issues with displaying blogs on version 8, but that's another story. Hopefully this will get fixed too.

On principle we shouldn't need to buy this, however....
