Problem with Duplicate/New Templates

Why is it that when i duplicate template or create custom template that the footer and some of the other controls always change on the page and home templates? How do I fix this. I want a different template based on the wordpress page being shown. This is driving me insane. Is there a list somewhere of what I consider "safe controls to use that don't get messed everywhere else on other templates?"

Hi,

Sorry, a little bit confused. You mean that you duplicate the template and when you change the footer, header, sidebars, they do change on all the other templates? That happens because those controls are shared. You can disable them on the new theme and add the desired (different) sections instead.

Sincerely,
Hella

Yes when I duplicate or create a new custom template, the footer, header, sidebars, sections, columns, etc all change on the other templates. Is there a list of controls that are shared, and a list that aren't. It drives me batty when I design a layout, and then go back to realize I can't use it because it is a shared control/section/etc. The other thing that behaves in the same manor is responsive views. Again because some things are shared, and other things aren't, it triples the development time, not knowing what is going to change and what isn't going to change from view to view, and from template to template. This by far is the worst aspect of this program. Wouldn't it be easier to have a tab for shared controls, and another for unshared controls? Honestly I have been an Artisteer user for a long time, then came to this, and I am very close to simply dropping this software for Dreamweaver because the developers simply can't get an intuitive interface correct (that seems to change as the wind blows and was a problem in the original Artisteer program as well.) You guys need to sit down with users, and figure out how to design a user interface so that people can actually us it so these little surprises stop happening and frustrating your clients. There is nothing wrong with the Ribbon, but again it is how you organize the features that makes it particularly bad. My suggestion design a flowchart and get your ducks in order so that your users can know exactly what feature/layout/design affect other areas of the program.

Thanks for the feedback.
bout the shared controls: the one that has orange border is shared. Also if you copy some control from one template and then Paste and Share on the other, that will also be shared. The content is unique for each template.
If you need help with some specific situation, please provide some examples and we would be glad to help.
As for the interface, indeed, we changed it recently, and we would left it like it is with the ribbon. The other problem is that Themler has a huge amount of features and we need to insert all of them in a simple interface, seems a bit complicated task, so some issues may occur. So when you do not find some option or anything else, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,
Hella

Here is the situation. I created the page template (I have inserted 3 rows of 3 column sections on a page).

I create a new custom template (switch to it in the navigator on the top, and then switch to the page I want it applied to.) The 3 rows, 3 column sections are all blue outlined. I tried to delete it.. It deletes it from every page template.

So where exactly am I supposed to be disabling them? Clicking on the 3 column section revels no options to disable on this template.

Hello Stewart,
I apologize for delay in response.
Do you mean that when you removed the Columns control from the new (duplicated) template, the Columns is removed from the initial template?
If so then please provide us with access to your CMS admin back end and note the templates which are demonstrating the problem.

However if Columns was removed from one template only, then it's OK that Columns is removed from all pages which are based on this template.

Please let us know if I misunderstood you.

Regards,
Aileen

Yes

"When I removed the columns control from the new (duplicated) template, the columns is removed from the initial page template" This column control (is highlighted in blue) indicating it is not shared.

Hi,

In fact there is an issue with customizing of the Posts control on duplicated templates.
Our developers are working on this issue and it should be fixed in the future Themler updates.
In the meantime you can try creating NEW templates instead of using DUPLICATE option.

Thank you,
Olivia

Yeah thanks I gave up already, and deleted and re-added the columns.
