Is there any way to make the quantity/update column in the shopping cart more elegant? Maybe up & down arrows in the form field rather than the big update button, or an update icon rather than the word update. Looks clumsy.

Hello Chris,
actually Themler themes are using the same shopping cart layout as default Joomla themes, and this button is a part of VM shopping cart. Button cannot be replaced with something else in Themler but it may be styled to look differently.
Use Cart >> Button options to do it
